The
article I read is called "Sir Gawain and the Green knight as a Christmas poem"
by Jean Louise Carriere . The article discusses the topic of Sir Gawain and the
Green knight being called a Christmas poem. The first thing it says is that the
poem takes place during Christmas celebrations and the colors used are meaning
of Christmas green , red , gold . the
writer says that one big purpose of this
poem is to demonstrate the meaning of Christmas by including the knights of the
round table who have the same knowledge as the audience . other then just having to
write about charismas but also the pride
of Arthur court for their own presumed perfection . he also says
that the poem uses three techniques to
make Gawain know for his perfection . Giving
voice to their sentiments and portrayal of their actions and
lastly his ego . And also how his characteristics are being challenge by his
faith . Gawain represents the court and it's their reputation for perfection.. in a way this can be seen as a lessoned not only
for him but for the whole court in itself of charismas . " This reputed
and assumed perfection is related to the Christmas motif which bulks so large in the poem through the
medieval interpretation of the concept of perfection ". he also involved
the church into and how it teaches two themes , the concept of perfection and
the meaning of Christmas.
I don't
think it has anything to do with Christmas
. For me the poem has more of a theme of
faith which can be seen in the poem . Gawain believes a lot on god and believed in keeping to
his word even if he made a mistake in the end . In a way the article did help
me understand a little bit more of the poem
and see a new point within it .
