The Better Hero

Thought out this class we have read stories about heroes who are brave and honor. But who is the best hero out of all the stories we have read. A description of hero is a man who is admired for his achievements and noble qualities. Only two heroes stand out of all the stories as a hero who fits this description Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

Beowulf is the first that has a more heroic undergo from him since the beginning he has bravery, strength and loyalty. He has supernatural being like power in which he was able to rip the immense arm off Grandel. : “The monster’s whole body was in pain;  a tremendous wound appeared on his shoulders. Sinews split and the bone – lappings burst. Beowulf was granted the glory of winning” (814-818). Beowulf demonstrates his great strength in being able to rip off the arm of a great demon like Grandel. In being able to hurt Grendel it was a great advantage for him in being to show just how strong he is without using any weapons. Beowulf has massive string that defines him as a hero.

AE Preliminaries

The Better Hero

 Sir Gawain and Beowulf both have different ways in which they are conspired heroes but who is the better hero. Beowulf is often praised for having strength and greatness along with wanting to achieve his personal goal. In the other hand sir Gawain is humble and also feeble minded but also weak compare to the other knights .Both have a goal and that is to protect what they believe and care . Beowulf  had a ending with success in protecting his town and will doing it giving his life. Sir Gawain did the same but for him not everything ended like he planed and earned a scarf that will forever remain intact .

Quotes :

1."I am the weakest of your warriors and feeblest of wit;
 loss of my life would be leaset lamented.
Were I not your nephew my life would mean nothing;” […] (354 - 357)

2.“I have heard moreover that the monster scorns
in his reckless way to use weapons;
therefore, to heighten Hygelac's fame
and gladden his heart, I hereby renounce
sword and the shelter of the broad shield,
the heavy war-board: hand-to-hand
is how it will be, a life-and-death
fight with the fiend." (433-440)

3. There was less tampering and big talk then
from Unferth the boaster, less of his blather
as the hall-thanes eyed the awful proof
of the hero's prowess, the splayed hand
up under the eaves. Every nail,
claw-scale and spur, every spike
and welt on the hand of that heathen brute
was like barbed steel. Everybody said
there was no honed iron hard enough
to pierce him through, no time-proofed blade
that could cut his brutal, blood-caked claw. (979-989)

1.Sir Gawain id describing himself as not being the best even do the king is his uncle he will still give it him all to be the best in what he does .

2.Beowulf is telling his story on how he defeated monsters single handed with a sword and shield with no help of no one. He is bragging on how strong he is in a fight.

3. Beowulf is telling his story of how he was able to take Grandel down and how happy they are having his arm hanged from the wall . how he only had to use his strengths to take from him how it proves his a hero . and like everyone else said that not even a sword would not pierce him . he is proving everyone wrong of what they said even unferth " the boasster".

Mini-Analysis politics : Marriage

The view with in marriage in The Wife of Bath . In the wife of bath begins with a argument of her own five marriages. And how every single one was different and that women did not necessarily had to become nun after having to be married ones. She was willingly getting married for sex and money in which she was satisfied . The wife of Bath felt that it's not necessary to have a normal marriage life so she thorns her back on the tradition : "Experience, though noon auctoritee /Were in this world, is right ynough for me / to speke of wo that is in mariage. / For lorrdinges, sith I twelf yeer was opf age, / thanked be god taht is eterne on live, / Housbondes at chirche dore i have had five."(1-6) the wife of bath had five husbands and a very free lived where she was the one making the choices for herself instead of the husbands . She makes a lot of references to how god and how there is nothing wrong with being married more than one time . For the wife of  bath she choose the best of the best husbands for herself they had money and "nether purs" : "Blessed be god that i have wedded five,/ of whiche i have piked out the best ,/ Bothe of his nether purs and his cheste "(44-46) . For her it was more important to have money and sex then to be happy . In which don't go with what people normally believed about marriage during this time. The wife of bath had a lot interst in haveing a fun marriage but also it was a warning for man to be careful.
